This film was an extraordinary and unique documentary produced by the Imperial War Museum. Dr Ian Adamson, OBE, Vice-President of the Somme Association read the following poem by Robert Laurence Binyon (1869-1943), originally published in The Times newspaper on 21<sup>st<\/sup> September 1914.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>For the Fallen<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,\u2028 England mourns for her dead across the sea.\u2028 Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,\u2028 Fallen in the cause of the free.<\/p>\n<p>Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal\u2028 Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres. There is music in the midst of desolation. \u2028And a glory that shines upon our tears.<\/p>\n<p>They went with songs to the battle, they were young,\u2028 Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow. \u2028They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,\u2028 They fell with their faces to the foe.<\/p>\n<p>They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.\u2028 At the going down of the sun and in the morning\u2028. We will remember them.<\/p>\n<p>They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;\u2028 They sit no more at familiar tables of home;\u2028 They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;\u2028 They sleep beyond England&#8217;s foam.<\/p>\n<p>But where our desires are and our hopes profound,\u2028 Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,\u2028 To the innermost heart of their own land they are known\u2028.
