Dr Ian Adamson OBE, Vice President of the Somme Association, was proud to attend the Ulster Tower in Thiepval, France this month. The beautiful Memorial was based on Helen’s Tower, in Dr Adamson’s native village of Conlig, in view of Clandeboye Camp, where the 36th (Ulster) Division had trained. Dr Adamson was responsible for its refurbishment under the auspices of Farset Youth and Community Development (Ltd) and its subsequent Rededication by HRH Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester in 1989. Dr Adamson became the founding chairman of the Somme Association the following year but was forced to retire just before the Somme Centenary due to illness. Having recovered, he is now Vice President of the Somme Association along with Lord Brookeborough. HRH the Duke of Gloucester remains the President.
