Péronne is close to where the 1916, first 1918 and second 1918 Battles of the Somme took place during the First World War. The Museum of the Great War is located in the château.The Musée Alfred Danicourt was founded in the Hôtel-de-ville in 1877 as a cultural beacon of the Somme but was pillaged by the Germans during the War. Nowadays one can find there one of the finest collections of early Gallic coins, and Merovingian funeral artefacts, thus linking it to the Merovingian beads found at the Great Hill Fort of Dal Fiatach on Scrabo Hill, Newtownards.
